We are looking for an experienced Senior Advisor to join our Government & Executive Services (GES) team in Wellington.

GES plays a crucial role in managing the flow of information and providing timely, expert advice and support between IR and the Minister's office. GES reviews all written communication for the Minister, to ensure it meets IR's and the Minister's standards and aligns with current messages.  You will need to conduct research, liaise with staff across the organisation, and ensure that required timeframes are met.

This role provides the opportunity to provide robust advice, guidance and support to IR staff on the machinery of government, parliamentary processes, and other technical matters. Naturally resilient and agile, you will remain composed in all situations and environments in order to communicate this advice effectively. You won't be afraid to challenge the status quo, and will freely share your ideas on how we can improve our processes.

As a Senior Ministerial Advisor, you will have the additional responsibilities of playing a mentoring role within the wider GES team and acting as the first point of contact for urgent queries from the Minister's office. You will also have extensive knowledge around the Official Information Act 1982 and established networks across IR.

You will have experience managing projects or events as this role plays a major part in managing the select committee process for IR and the Minister's office.

We are seeking a motivated individual, who can deliver under pressure and work well as an individual and within a team. You will have a sharp mind, provide high-quality written and oral advice and have the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Superior relationship management and negotiation skills
  • Excellent organisational skills, including time management skills, ability to work well under pressure and manage competing priorities and expectations with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to maintain consistently high standards and the ability to QA work
  • The ability to prioritise and handle multiple urgent matters concurrently
  • The ability to identify issues that need to be brought to the Minister's attention.
  • Knowledgeable about the machinery of government, the contemporary political environment, government policies, and current events
  • An understanding of, and experience in, the public sector and familiarity with Parliamentary protocols and, in particular, the Official Information Act
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to write documents that are clear, concise and in plain English
